ABOUT JANE

After a 2-year Foundation Course at St. Martin’s School of Art, Jane became an assistant to Edward Delaney, a well known scenic artist. She painted on black cloths for everything from Grand Opera to Bertram Mills’ circus!

She continued working in the theatre, finally becoming a designer for Opera, Film, Theatre and Television productions.
In 1978 after taking life classes, she became obsessed with drawing for its own sake, went to City and Guilds School of Art as a mature student for a 3-year painting diploma, and was then offered a Post Graduate place at the Royal Academy Schools for a further 3 years.
Apart from a passion for drawing trees her work is mainly concerned with painting people in their environment. She is fascinated by the play of light on figures and fabrics, and paints quite slowly as she enjoys music and conversations with her sitters.

METHOD OF WORKING

After meeting a sitter and discussing ideas, she make sketches and take photographs before preparing the canvas. Jane requires eight to twelve sittings in her studio which are usually from two to three hours – with plenty of breaks !

If necessary, Jane is happy to visit sitters in their own surroundings, but prefers to complete the work in her studio in West London. I am not currently registered for VAT.
